Note: Effective August 1, 2003, Central Michigan
University will begin gradual phase-out of the dial-up services. Under the
reduced service plan, CMU will preserve dial-up Internet access for all users in
the local calling area. Statewide Internet access will no longer be available.
Local users may access the university network by dialing 774-2224. See
ISP FAQs and Local
ISP List for replacement service information.
- Click Start, point to and right-click on "My Network Places", and then
left-click "Properties". A “Network Connections” window should appear shortly.
Note If "My Network Places" does not appear, click "Control Panel" from the
Start Menu. If “Pick a Category” is displayed, click "Network and Internet
Connections", then "Network Connections" from the next displayed window. If “Pick
a Category” is NOT displayed, simply double-click the "Network Connections" icon.
- From the "Network Tasks" menu in the pane on the left-hand side of the
window, click the "Create a new connection" option. This will start the
"New
Connection Wizard".
- The first window that appears prompts you with a
message welcoming you to the New Connection Wizard. Click Next to continue.
- The window that appears prompts you for the type of network connection to
set up, as shown below. Choose the "Connect to the Internet" option, which
is the default. Then click Next.

- Select how you want to connect to the Internet. Choose the "Set up my
connection manually" option, then click Next.

- Select the way in which you will be connecting to
the Internet. Choose "Connect using a dial-up modem." Then click Next.

- Enter the name of your ISP. We recommend you enter "CMU" (no quotation
marks). Click Next.

- Enter the phone number for the dial-up connection.
This is 774-2224 if you are in the Mt. Pleasant area. If you are on campus,
the number is 2224. In some
areas, it may be necessary to dial a "1" followed by the area code and phone
number. Click Next.
|
Please be aware that long-distance charges may apply if you are
connecting to a dial up number outside your local toll-free calling
area. Your local telephone service provider can determine if a dial-up
number will incur long-distance charges. CMU cannot be held responsible
for charges incurred from connecting to dial-up services. |

- The next window asks for whom the connection should be available. Make
sure that "Anyone’s Use" is selected. Click Next.

- Enter your Global ID in the "User name" field. You will also need to enter
your password in both the "Password" and "Confirm password" fields. If you
do not know your global ID or password, contact the Information Technology
Help Desk at (989) 774-3662. Also, uncheck the "Turn on Internet
Connection Firewall for this connection" option. Click Next.

- A window confirming successful
creation of a dial-up networking connection appears. Click to place a check in the
check box next to the option to "Add a shortcut to this connection to my
desktop" to provide an easy means to access the dial-up connection. Click Finish to complete the process.
Close the "Network Connections"
window.

- To connect to the Internet, double-click the shortcut on the desktop, then
click Dial.
